What is Somatic Experiencing?
Dr. Peter Levine
Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented approach to healing trauma developed by Dr. Peter Levine over 40 years of scientific research.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, which focuses on the mind, SE focuses on the renegotiation of the physiology of trauma.
It offers a safe, gradual way for survivors to release the "stuck" survival energy caused by overwhelming events, restoring the body’s natural ability to self-regulate.
Dr. Levine’s research began with a simple observation: animals in the wild are constantly under threat, yet they are rarely traumatized. They possess innate mechanisms to "shake off" or discharge massive amounts of energy after a life-threatening event. Humans have these same biological regulatory processes. However, we often block them due to rational thought, shame, or fear.
Somatic Experiencing uses body awareness as a primary tool to bypass the "thinking brain" and access the lower structures of the brain where trauma is stored. In SE, "less is more"—we work with tiny sensations to safely negotiate the healing process without re-traumatizing the system.
How Does Somatic Experiencing Work?
What is Trauma?
The Science of "Stuck" Energy
Trauma is not just "in your head"; it is energy trapped in your neuromuscular and autonomic nervous systems . When we face a threat and cannot fully complete our fight-or-flight response, that massive survival energy becomes disorganized and "stuck" in the body, that keeps on repeating “on and on and on…” If this energy isn't discharged, it manifests as a constellation of symptoms, including:
Chronic pain and migraines
Anxiety and panic attacks
Depression and numbness
Hyper-vigilance (feeling constantly on guard)
Intrusive thoughts and flashbacks
Who Can Benefit from Somatic Experiencing?
SE is a powerful antidote for PTSD and can help anyone who has experienced overwhelming life events. It is particularly effective for:
Medical Trauma
Recovering from surgery, anesthesia, or long periods of immobility.
Accidents
Falls, motor vehicle accidents, or concussions.
Emotional Loss
The abrupt loss of a loved one or major life changes.
Physical Shock
Near-drowning, suffocation, or natural disasters.
Chronic Stress
Burn-out, digestive issues (IBS), and chronic fatigue.
Early Trauma
Pre-natal and perinatal trauma.
In general, SE is a powerful antidote to those dealing with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). If you are currently seeing another therapist to address other concerns and wish to include SE into your healing process, discuss this wish with your therapist. SE can be used together with other approaches as a complementary modality.
Understanding Your "Window of Tolerance"
A key goal of our sessions is expanding your Window of Tolerance. This is the "zone" where your nervous system feels regulated and you are able to cope with life's challenges effectively.Your Window of tolerance is a zone in your nervous system. When you are in it, you feel your boundaries and you are able to cope with the punches that life throws at you. When you are in a zone of dysregulation, you can be with that... it feels difficult. There you don't feel out of control, but you don't feel comfortable. When you are in an hyper-arousal or hypo-arousal zone, you might feel easily overwhelmed. You have limited choices because the survival responses in your body take over and you feel out of control. During sessions, we will use resources and activating states . We might discharge remaining energy in the body. So, you are learning to be back in your window of tolerance.
Hyper-arousal: You feel "too much"—anxious, angry, or out of control.
Hypo-arousal: You feel "too little"—numb, exhausted, or disconnected.
Dysregulation: You feel uncomfortable and easily overwhelmed.
Through SE, you learn to navigate these states, helping your body return to a state of safety and flow.
What Does a Somatic Experiencing Session Look Like?
While we sit in a comfortable setting similar to talk therapy, the process is very different. Instead of just "telling the story," I invite you to engage with your inner body awareness.
Focus
We track physical sensations to discover your body’s innate healing path.
Pace
We go slowly to ensure your nervous system stays within its window of tolerance.
Touch
Occasionally, and only with your explicit consent, I may use supportive touch to help contain or guide the experience.
Self-Healing
SE is your journey; I am the guide helping you rediscover your own capacity for health.
The Benefits of a Regulated Nervous System
When your nervous system is regulated, your entire quality of life improves. You may notice:
Improved sleep, digestion, and concentration.
Decreased intensity of nightmares and flashbacks.
Reduction in muscle tension and chronic pain.
Increased patience, creativity, and love for life.
A natural ability to help others feel at ease through your own calm presence.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Traditional talk therapy focuses on the "top-down" approach (the thinking mind). Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a "bottom-up" approach. It focuses on the physiological sensations in the body where trauma is actually stored. By working with the nervous system rather than just the story, we can resolve trauma without needing to relive the painful details of the past.
-
Yes. Many chronic conditions—such as migraines, digestive issues (IBS), and muscle tension—are often physical manifestations of a "stuck" stress response. SE helps the body discharge the disorganized energy that fuels these symptoms, often leading to a significant reduction in chronic pain and improved physical health.
-
Absolutely. Because SE relies on internal body awareness and attunement, it works exceptionally well online. Many clients find that being in their own home allows their nervous system to feel safer and more relaxed, which can actually accelerate the healing process.
-
SE is highly beneficial for those dealing with PTSD, anxiety, and shock trauma. However, it is not recommended as a primary treatment for severe psychotic or major personality disorders. It can, however, be used as a powerful complementary modality alongside other forms of therapy.
